The 1st B.V. Doshi Memorial Exhibition, held at Kalavaani, Swabhumi, Kolkata, featured the works of three distinguished architects from Ahmedabad — Neelkanth Chhaya, Sohan Nilkanth, and Kallol Joshi of Mandala Design Services — whose careers have been deeply shaped by Shri Doshi's philosophy of thoughtful design and sustainability.
Neelkanth Chhaya is an architect and academic whose influence on architectural education in India spans decades. A graduate of CEPT, he practised in Kenya and taught at the University of Nairobi before returning to India to co-found Mandala Design Services. His notable projects include the Centre for Environment Education in Ahmedabad, post-earthquake housing in Gujarat, and the Khamir Craft Park near Bhuj, Kutch. He holds the UNESCO Chair in Heritage, Sustainability, and Livelihoods at the Srishti Institute, Bangalore.
Kallol Joshi is known for his sensitive approach to architecture, with projects such as the UNEP and HABITAT Headquarters in Nairobi among his international works — a practice equally attentive to local context and global responsibility.
Sohan Nilkanth rounds out the collaborative, having joined Mandala Design Services in 1989, after the firm was founded by Chhaya and Joshi in 1987. Together, the three have built a retrospective spanning over four decades of architectural innovation and social responsibility, exploring how their designs have evolved in response to India's socio-political, economic, and cultural transformations since the 1980s.
Their collective body of work — grounded in the ordinary, elevating the everyday — made them a fitting tribute to the legacy of B.V. Doshi at the very first edition of this memorial exhibition.
